From Vision to Identity: The Unit’s Rebranding in iGaming

Based in New York, David Hilton is an independent Creative Director with extensive experience in the sports, entertainment, betting, and iGaming sectors. He has held creative leadership roles at global brands on both sides of the Atlantic, including WWE, XFL, William Hill, FOX Bet, PokerStars, and Flutter Entertainment’s FanDuel Group. What was the inspiration behind the new visual brand identity for The Unit?

“When The Unit approached me to refresh their visual identity, it was clear from the outset that they had strong confidence in their products and a clear vision for future growth. Capturing and conveying this energy became essential in representing their vision, serving as the guiding force for the rebranding. Understanding the brand from their perspective, as well as through the eyes of their existing partners and prospective clients, was crucial to the transformation.”

“I was provided with a clear brief expressing a desire for a forward-thinking brand identity that aligns with The Unit’s global expansion plans, particularly focusing on the U.S. market. Their goal was to effectively communicate their expertise and services as product design and development innovators in the sports betting and iGaming sector. They aimed to establish a vibrant and cohesive brand experience that reflects their core values and differentiates them in today’s market.”

Walk me through the key design elements, such as the logo, color palette, and typography. Please explain the significance behind each choice?

“Developing a visual identity that reflects The Unit’s expertise and precision was paramount. Serving as our foundation, we crafted a distinctive and scalable system to ensure clarity and cohesion across all interactions, while remaining adaptable for The Unit’s future expansion plans. However, this refresh transcends aesthetics; it was designed to encapsulate how The Unit presents itself in every daily interaction.”

  • Flexible Logo System

“Our logo system embodies the energy, confidence, and trust synonymous with The Unit. Designed for versatility, it includes alternate logos that complement the primary set, ensuring optimal functionality across today’s diverse digital platforms. This approach, inspired by industry leaders like Google and Nike, offers boundless motion possibilities. From the primary combination logo to the social-friendly “U” icon, optimum branding is guaranteed and remains strong, simple, and instantly recognizable.”

  • Color Palette

“We delved into color psychology to design a palette that aligns with The Unit’s brand values and enhances visual recognition. Attributes such as wisdom, trust, professionalism, communication, innovation, transformation, creativity, and energy are conveyed through our color choices. It was also essential that the team’s personality and spark shine through—from Volt Blue to Shock Pink, the palette is unmistakably The Unit. We also prioritized testing for optimal contrast and legibility, implementing a limited palette to ensure clarity and consistency from launch.”

  • Typography

“We selected premium, legible typefaces to establish a clear messaging hierarchy across all touchpoints. The Unit prides itself on collaboration and clear communication, qualities we aimed to reflect in our typographic choices.”

What feedback did you gather during the design process, and how did it influence the final outcome?

“To thoroughly understand the company’s ethos, I collaborated closely with The Unit, immersing myself in the business they have passionately developed since 2017. On the recommendation of The Unit advisor, Andy Clerkson, they selected me as the ideal partner for the rebrand, due to my extensive experience in the sports betting and iGaming industry across both European and U.S. markets.”

“By leveraging our network of trusted colleagues and conducting AI-driven research, we gathered valuable feedback and competitor analysis. This collective insight, drawn from creative minds across Dublin, London, New York, and Las Vegas, significantly shaped the final visual identity, ensuring it resonates with relevant audiences but also stands out in a competitive space.”

What were the biggest challenges you faced during the process, and how were they overcome?

“Throughout the rebranding process, challenges were minimal. The Unit struck the perfect balance between providing a solid brief and a willingness to allow creative freedom, highlighting their trust for my area of expertise. We explored various directions, and their quick, honest, and straightforward feedback was refreshing.”

“The real challenge lies ahead. For any brand implementing a new visual identity, it’s crucial for all teams to embrace the ethos and adhere to the brand guidelines. Applying the design system with relentless consistency is essential to maintaining a coherent brand appearance. However, we deliberately excluded strict “Do’s and Don’ts” in the guide to encourage creativity and evolution within the framework. Periodic reviews and updates to accommodate future growth and changes are important.”

“The Unit is a fun and collaborative team to work with, which made for a thoroughly enjoyable experience and resulted in a new visual identity they can be proud of. And there’s more to come!”

The Unit’s Rebranding from A Technical Standpoint

Artiom Bazirca, Head of Program Management at The Unit, is a seasoned professional with a strong foundation in project and program management. His expertise and leadership played a pivotal role during The Unit’s recent rebrand, ensuring a seamless alignment between the company’s internal processes and its refreshed external identity. Below, Artiom shared his insights into the development processes his team worked on to support the rebranding efforts.

What Were the Primary Technical Considerations for a Website Rebranding?

“Our development team places emphasis on ensuring that all current material is appropriately moved to the new design or platform. We assess which content needs to be revised, updated, or preserved to align with the rebrand.

“From an SEO perspective, it’s crucial to prevent losing search rankings by implementing appropriate 301 redirects, preserving structured data, alt text, and meta tags. Performance is another key focus; we ensure that the updated layout does not adversely affect the site’s speed or functionality by optimizing assets, scripts, and images.”

’User experience is also a priority. We aim to create an interface that is both easy and intuitive to use. Compatibility across various devices, browsers, and screen sizes is essential, so we thoroughly test the redesigned interface’s responsiveness. Lastly, but just as importantly, we dedicate attention to scaling and security to ensure the site remains robust and adaptable for future growth.”

What Are Common Challenges Faced During the Web Rebranding Process and How to Overcome Them?

“One of the challenges during a web rebranding process can be that different people have conflicting visions regarding the rebrand, which can take time to agree on a final version. However, this is not the case at The Unit. We share the same vision, know our goals, and do our best to achieve them. Other setbacks include Technical debt, SEO risks, tight deadlines, and coordinating the team effectively.”

What Is Your Advice for a Smooth and Successful Site Rebrand?

“For a successful release, it’s crucial to define clear objectives, timelines, and deliverables. We also need to conduct an audit of the current site to identify what can be improved. Involving all stakeholders as early as possible helps understand their expectations. Input from marketing, design, development, and business teams should be included early in the process. Nevertheless, one should regularly review progress and get sign-offs at key milestones.”

“Prioritizing UX is essential. Before launch, we should validate design and functionality decisions with user testing to ensure the new design meets both existing user needs and future growth goals. Use staging environments to test all changes before pushing them live, simulating real-world conditions for performance and compatibility testing.”

“During the transition, maintaining analytics tracking, customer data, and SEO metrics is key. After the rebrand, we should monitor KPIs closely to assess success and make necessary adjustments. A rollback plan should be in place in case of any major issues. Finally, it’s vital to notify users about the rebrand through newsletters, blog posts, or pop-ups.”
